Morgan Schneiderlin retained his place in Everton’s starting eleven against Liverpool on Sunday and he repaid Marco Silva’s show of faith with a decent showing at the heart of midfield.
Chequered career since leaving Southampton
The France international promised to enjoy a huge future in English football when he left Southampton for Manchester United, but his career has been on a downward spiral ever since.
A move to Goodison Park was supposed to breathe new life into his career, but expectation has not been mirrored by reality thus far.
He has endured a stop-start season under Marco Silva due to personal reasons and he has been on the periphery for the vast majority of the campaign.
Despite his lack of first-team football this season, Silva included Schneiderlin in his starting line-up to face Liverpool this weekend and he showcased enough glimpses of quality to suggest that he could yet resurrect his career at the club.
Future role to play under Marco Silva?
The Portuguese manager’s decision to play Schneiderlin from the start in an encounter Liverpool was telling: he values his ability and envisages a major role for him at the club.
Andre Gomes is pencilled in to return to Barcelona with no deal in place to keep him at Goodison beyond the summer, and that could enhance Schneiderlin’s hopes of re-establishing himself in midfield.
It’s also worth considering that Idrissa Gueye submitted a transfer request to force a move to Paris Saint-Germain in January, and his departure could yet open the door for the 29-year-old to make the holding midfield role his own.
Either way it’s fair to say there is still life remaining in Schneiderlin’s Everton career after justifying Silva’s decision to start him in the Merseyside derby.
