As reported by The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro this January.
What’s the story?
While Spurs obviously have the exceptional talents of Harry Kane to rely on in attack, options beyond the England international are pretty sparse, with just the out of form Fernando Llorente really available to fill in for the goal hero.
Mauricio Pochettino could do with more depth in the position and it seems he’s settled on one January target in particular.
The Sun report that Spurs are interested in a loan move for striker Kevin Gameiro, who is currently performing a similar role at Atletico Madrid this season.
The arrival of Diego Costa means that Gameiro has fallen further down the pecking order at the Spanish club and Spurs are reported to have tipped off the striker’s camp that they’d be interested in taking him to the English Premier League on a temporary basis.
Danger man
There’s no doubt that on his day that Gameiro is an elite striker and has a proven scoring track record at clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla and Atletico themselves.
He may be struggling a bit for form this season but last term netted an impressive 16 times in all competitions, also contributing seven assists.
That kind of fire power would given Tottenham a real edge should their star man Harry Kane require a rest or pick up a niggling injury and would certainly be an upgrade on Llorente, who looks past his peak at 32 and has failed to impress since joining from Swansea.
Rated at £18m by Transfermarkt, signing him on loan would be also be a shrewd move this January and is risk free for a side with Tottenham’s resources.
