Speaking on BT Sport, former Celtic hero Chris Sutton has criticised Hoops striker Leigh Griffiths heavily for off the field antics against Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday.
What’s the story?
The Scotland international was again seen trying to tie a Celtic scarf round the post after doing similar last season and was caught on camera wiping his nose on a Rangers corner flag.
Celtic icon Chris Sutton was less than impressed though and aired his views on BT Sport yesterday.
The BT pundit said:
Leigh Griffiths, the great player that he is, I’m a huge fan of his but he has to stop these silly antics. Tying a scarf round a post. He got banned from Rosenborg because of his stupid antics.ÂIt’s not befitting of a Celtic player to act that way. Leigh Griffiths needs to grow up.
Harsh words indeed but is Sutton missing the point that without this edge to his game Leigh Griffiths simply wouldn’t be the same player?
A unique talent
Griffith is a fantastic talent for Celtic and has been for a few seasons now. He’s always shown he loves to wind-up opposition fans on and off the pitch and that swagger is something that just naturally comes with his game. Some may find it childish, but he thrives on being the main man hitting the headlines and is likely unfazed by Sutton’s words.
It’s hard to argue with 91 goals in 156 appearances and unless crossing the line, it’s doubtful Celtic will care too much about what he gets up to wind up the opposition. Losing that mischievous edge to his game could neuter his performances and nobody at the Hoops wants to see that.
