Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been told by the club that he needs to sell players before bringing in new faces in January, according to BBC Sport.
What’s the word?
The Red Devils are one of the richest clubs in the world and have spared no expense in bringing in top talent.
The Premier League giants made Paul Pogba the priciest footballer in the sport’s history when they re-signed him for £89m last year.
That figure was eclipsed by Paris Saint-Germain when they forked out around £200m to recruit Neymar from Barcelona in the summer.
BBC Sport reports that Mourinho has spent £285m on transfer fees over the past two years.
Including Pogba, the club have spent vast amounts on bringing in Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
As well as that, the club’s wage bill has risen by 13.5% to £263.5m, and as a result, Mourinho needs to offload some of the deadweight to bring in new players.
Who could go?
Luke Shaw is the first name that springs to mind given that he is struggling for game time under Mourinho.
The left-back has also had his attitude and fitness publicly questioned by the Portuguese coach.
Tottenham Hotspur and the England international’s former club Southampton have been registered with an interest in signing Shaw.
According to Turkish newspaper Fanatik, Fenerbahce are also a rumoured potential destination for the 22-year-old.
Marouane Fellaini could also be on the way out of Old Trafford having started just three Premier League games so far this season.
